Davao Short History

"On March 16, 1936, Assemblyman Romualdo Quimpo sponsored a bill in Congress that will turn Davao into a chartered city. In March 1, 1937, Davao City was formally inaugurated under President Manuel L. Quezon"

"During the ancient times, Davao has already been a place of different tribes and ethnic groups coming from different regions of the Philippines and people in the nearby countries of Malaysia, Indonesia and Borneo. The native tribes that comprise the majority group of ethnic tribes in Davao during the early times were the Bagobos, Bilaans, Guiangans, Tagacaolos, Manobos, Mandayas, Mansakas and Atas. The early Muslim Maguindanaons, who were traders and merchants, also came to this place to do business."

"The name Davao was probably derived from the Bagobo word "Daba-daba" which means "fire." The early Jesuit priests refered to this place as a region of flames or fire as recorded in their early books. Many natives, however, believe that the name Davao was derived from the great river which the early Tagabawa tribe refered to as Dabu."

"In 1848, the Spanish forces, led by Don Jose de Oyanguren, launched an expedition and defeated the Muslims and killed their leader Dato Bago. Oyanguren then started to build a Christian community."

Intramuros Manila

Located at the mouth of Pasig River, the walls of Intramuros surround one of the best preserved medieval cities anywhere in the world," as noted by the great American architect and city planner Daniel Burnham.

Palawan: Philippines's Last Prestige

"Tubbataha Reefs National Marine Park is the country’s largest marine habitat. It hosts giant manta rays, sea turtles and hundreds of reef fish species. Located at the heart of the Sulu Sea, the marine park is 33,200 hectares of coral atoll, barely emergent islets and open water, and constitutes a unique complete open ocean ecosystem. It is inscribed in the World Heritage List as "rare and superlative phenomena as well as formations, features and areas of exceptional beauty." It is located some 98 nautical miles from Puerto Princesa and is a premier diving destination.
For a long time, Palawan’s bountiful resources, abundant wildlife and extraordinary natural beauty are known only to the many ethnic communities that thrive in these islands and a few other daring settlers who wanted to live in unpolluted surroundings.
As the story goes, a tuna line disabled a dive boat’s propeller in the middle of the night forcing it to drop anchor in an inlet. The following morning, the divers woke up to an amazing scenery of skyscraping dark cliffs, thick green forest, white-sand beach, sparkling water and, rising above it, a series of magnificently sculpted jade islands. And thus was how El Nido was discovered.
Ecology awareness is at a high level throughout the province. Puerto Princesa prides itself as the cleanest city in the Philippines. To protect its megadiversity, only eco-friendly programs are adhered to by tourist establishments. And there are strict ordinances against dynamite fishing, with only net and line fishing allowed. Palawan may have opened itself to tourism but it has also taken serious efforts to preserve this last frontier."

Kennon Road: Baguio

"Kennon Road was ordered built by American governor general William Cameron Forbes in 1901. Although originally called Benguet Road, it was named after U.S. Army Colonel Lyman N. Kennon who was its final builder. With the labor of Igorots and some foreign workers, the road was completed in 1903 and has since become a major route to Baguio City."

This is another pride of the city and the heritage of American soldiers who came the city. kennon Road is also one of the amazing place in the country. Every time someone is passing by this beautiful road, the reflection of history plays back how many decades ago.

"According to records, between 2,300 to 4,000 workers were employed in the building of the road, all of different nationalities— American, Hawaiian, Indian, Mexican, Chinese, German, Irish, English, Swedish, French, Japanese and, of course, Filipino. Colonel Kennon is thus credited for employing the first overseas contract workers to the Philippines. A breakdown of the figures showed that 49 percent of the workers were Filipinos, 22.5 percent were Japanese, 17.5 percent were Americans and Europeans, 11 percent were Chinese, and the remaining 11 percent were from Latin America and other countries."

The history shows that Filipinos have great contribution during the making of the road. It shows also the unity of the different races towards one thing. We can't name them but we can see them by appreciating their work. The work that may last for century or even forever. Kennon Road symbolizes the richness of the Philippines in terms of historical places.

"The park is set to be the city's major tourist destination. It is expected to draw millions of visitors on its first year, offering a unique tourist experience beyond the usual shopping activities,"

Manila Ocean park is constructed by Singaporean and Malaysian investors at Rizal Park back of Quirino Grandstand. It was officially opened in February 2008. Manila Ocean Park becomes one of the Philippine's tourists spot.

"Manila Ocean Park will showcase the rich marine resources of the Philippines , which along with Malaysia , Indonesia and the Pacific Islands form the Coral Triangle, considered as the world's center of marine biodiversity." said Lim the president of Manila Ocean Park.

The oceanarium has 20,000 different fish species. It is so nice to roam around there while watching the fishes live. It is like walking at the bottom of the ocean where you can go nearer to the swimming and crawling species on the sand. The amazing structure which imitates the true ocean's nature.

Manila Ocean Park also helps the sea water of the Manila Bay to be cleaned. The oceanarium gets water directly from the bay after filtering. The picture that you see is only one part of it which is already done. There are lots of phases to be built before this year ends.

Philippine Mountains and Landscape

Volcanic in origin, the Philippine Islands are the higher portions of a partly submerged mountain chain. The mountains are the principal topographical feature on the smaller islands. The larger islands, particularly Luzon and Mindanao, have a more diversified topography, with fertile river valleys in the interior. Mountain ranges generally parallel the coasts, forming narrow coastal plains. The inland plains and valleys are the most densely populated areas.

On Luzon the Sierra Madre mountains form the longest range of the Philippines, extending along the island’s eastern, or Pacific, coast. The parallel ranges of the Cordillera Central, to the west about 80 km (50 mi) across the Cagayan River Valley, contain Luzon’s highest peak, Mount Pulog, at 2,930 (9,613 ft). Near this peak, mountainside rice terraces have been cultivated for hundreds of years. Farther south the important rice-growing region of the Central Luzon Valley, well irrigated by numerous rivers, extends from Lingayen Gulf to Manila Bay. The rugged Zambales Mountains, containing Mount Pinatubo (1,780 m/5,840 ft), form the valley’s western boundary, leading south to the Bataan Peninsula, the sheltering landmass for Manila Bay. Luzon becomes narrow at its southern end, curving to the southeast in a long, mountainous extension called the Bicol Peninsula. Here a string of volcanoes includes the cone-shaped peak of Mayon Volcano, rising to a height of 2,525 m (8,284 ft) near Legaspi.

Mindanao is similarly formed, with coastal mountain ranges and inland valleys, notably those of the Agusan and Mindanao rivers. The Diuata Mountains bordering the eastern coast form the most prominent range on the island. The country’s highest point, Mount Apo (2,954 m/9,692 ft), rises in the south near the Mindanao River basin. The large Zamboanga Peninsula extends from western Mindanao, hooking southward toward the Sulu Archipelago.

The Visayas include seven major islands, among them the republic’s third largest island, Samar, with an area of 13,100 sq km (5,100 sq mi). The most easterly of the Visayas, Samar is connected by bridge to the adjacent island of Leyte; both islands are relatively undeveloped and have dense jungle forests. To the west are Bohol, site of the tourist attraction known as the Chocolate Hills, hundreds of cone-shaped hills with vegetation that turns brown during summer; Cebu, a long, narrow island and the most densely populated island in the Philippines; Negros, which developed from the mid-1800s as the center of the Philippine sugar industry; and Panay, where many agricultural crops are grown in the rich volcanic soils of the densely populated coastal plain of Iloilo Province. Masbate, in the north central Visayas, is noted for its gold and copper mines.

Most of the Philippine Islands are clustered in a predominantly north-south direction. In the southwest, two island groupings deviate from this predominant direction: the long, narrow island of Palawan and its offshore islands and, farther south, the approximately 900 small islands of the Sulu Archipelago. Both island groupings extend southwest toward Borneo with the Sulu Sea between them. The Sulu Archipelago includes many coral islands and reefs. Palawan Island is believed to be the first Philippine island to have been settled by people who migrated from the Southeast Asian mainland during prehistoric times.

Philippine Eagle

"Philippine Eagle" one of the Philippines' rarest bird mostly found in Mount Apo in Davao City. Philippine Eagle or (Pithecophaga jefferyi) is a wild creature that is beyond description. Its beauty shows that Philippine is reach in natural resources.

Do you know the secrets of this bird?

Philippine Eagle maybe the most honest creature i ever heared. The eagles when they felt inlove, its for sure, for the life time. Or monogamous.

In terms of courtship, the male eagle waits for how many years for him to take the love of the female eagle. Meaning, courtship lasts years before, maybe the female eagle would say "YES" Sounds ridiculous... but its true.

But like any other birds in the world, sad to say, Philippine Eagle belongs to the endangered animals. Its number of population decreased. Thanks for those foundations who are attempting to protect and save this birds. Lets help us. Save the forests, save the Philippine Eagle, save the Philippines endangered animals!

"Makiling" one of the Philippine's Camping Area

I have just arrived... my knees are so tired. Im so thirsty and hungry. I entered my room and take some rest before taking a bath and eat my dinner... My eyes are roaming around from one corner of my room to another. Speak nothing just sighs. But before my eyes will completely close, its worth to remember that tomorrow is thursday. A school day! Oh, i must prepare all of my assignments to submit regarding on what i have observed in the middle of the forest. Wow! yea, in the middle of the forest... that was in "Makiling" located in Laguna. The pride of Laguna.
Together with my classmates I was there for three days. Having fun, exploring more and of course learning the beauty of nature. It was not just part of our studies, but feeling how the real real nature is.
We were there inhaling the fragrance of its air from silent trees, diving in to the clear, clean and cold fresh water. Although everyday was a tired day, always, the excitement is there. During the night we heared nothing except the chirps of the insects with the cold breeze of the wind. Staying there is like reflecting yourself. There you can see things you never or even imagine before. The silent of its night pushes into a mere sanctuary.
After three days, as we got in the car my eyes were reluctant to leave the beauty of Mount Makiling. For a while i remembered the myth of the mountain. The magical beginning of Mount Makiling. But whatever it is, i came up with one conclusion that God made it and whatever mysteries behind He is the only one who really knows.
Oh, dear! its 9 pm. I have to eat now before i forget. See you in my next post...
